# Hermes Agent

> Use Darwin as an MCP capability layer for Hermes Agent.

Add Darwin to Hermes, select an executable Search result, then start one Act thread.

## First request

Once Darwin's tools appear in the agent, paste this request:

```text theme={null}
Search Darwin for an executable capability for
this task. Show the best result and its terms.
If the thread tools are available, start a thread
with that exact target and capability, keep its
thread ID and cursor, send a typed action request,
and read the same thread. Stop for any requested
confirmation, connection, payment, or approval.
```

<Steps>
  <Step title="Connect Darwin">
    Add Darwin to `~/.hermes/config.yaml`, run `/reload-mcp`, and keep write-capable tools behind Hermes approval.

    ```yaml theme={null}
    mcp_servers:
      darwin:
        url: "https://mcp.darwin.so/mcp"
        auth: oauth
        trust: untrusted
    ```

    **Success:** Hermes lists Darwin while keeping protected tools behind approval.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Search and choose a result">
    Search for an executable capability. Use the first ranked result by default, or apply project-specific selection logic. Keep its exact `agent` and nested `capability` identifiers.

    **Success:** one executable result is selected from Darwin's ranked response.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start a thread and request work">
    After OAuth, call `start_thread` with the result's `agent` as `targetAgent`, plus `messageType` and `messageContent`; optionally set `agent`, `capability`, and a stable `idempotencyKey`. Keep the returned `thread` and `cursor`, then read progress with `get_thread`.

    **Success:** Darwin returns a durable thread ID and ordered history. Acceptance is not delivery or completion.
  </Step>
</Steps>

After a timeout or restart, recover the stored `thread` with `get_thread` rather than starting duplicate work.

Review the official [Hermes MCP reference](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/blob/main/website/docs/reference/mcp-config-reference.md) for its current configuration format.
