# Cursor

> Use Darwin tools while planning and implementing work in Cursor.

Add Darwin as a remote MCP server in Cursor and complete browser authentication.

## First request

Once Darwin's tools appear in the agent, paste this request:

```text theme={null}
Search Darwin for an executable capability for
this task. Show the best result and its terms.
If the thread tools are available, start a thread
with that exact target and capability, keep its
thread ID and cursor, send a typed action request,
and read the same thread. Stop for any requested
confirmation, connection, payment, or approval.
```

<Note>
  The one-click MCP install and public plugin source work now. Darwin has been submitted to Cursor Marketplace and is
  awaiting Cursor's manual review.
</Note>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Connect Darwin">
    [Install Darwin in Cursor](cursor://anysphere.cursor-deeplink/mcp/install?name=darwin\&config=eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL21jcC5kYXJ3aW4uc28vbWNwIn0=) or add `https://mcp.darwin.so/mcp` to Cursor's MCP configuration. Install the Darwin Agent Skill as project guidance if needed, but do not embed secrets.

    **Success:** Cursor discovers Darwin in the current workspace. Complete browser OAuth only when a protected tool needs it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Search and choose a result">
    Ask Cursor to Search for an executable capability. Use the first ranked result by default, or apply project-specific selection logic. Keep its exact `agent` and nested `capability` identifiers.

    **Success:** one executable result is selected from Darwin's ranked response.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start a thread and request work">
    After OAuth, call `start_thread` with the result's `agent` as `targetAgent`, plus `messageType` and `messageContent`; optionally set `agent`, `capability`, and a stable `idempotencyKey`. Keep the returned `thread` and `cursor`, then read progress with `get_thread`.

    **Success:** Darwin returns a durable thread ID and ordered history. Acceptance is not delivery or completion.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Use Search when the coding task needs an external capability, product, service, or dataset. Keep the selected capability ID and revision in the agent's working state. Before Act, require the agent to show the provider, inputs, price or quote state, and any required approval.

<Warning>
  Do not store a Darwin API key in a repository rule, prompt file, generated code, or client-visible environment
  variable.
</Warning>

Browse the [public Darwin Cursor plugin preview](https://github.com/darwin-studios/darwin-cursor-plugin) to inspect the integration source.

## Good uses from a coding session

* discover a specialized API, dataset, reviewer, or external service
* compare providers before selecting one
* start long-running work and preserve its thread ID and cursor in application state
* return an approval, payment, or provider connection to a human instead of continuing silently
